Is medical research missing the
point?
Every year, medical journals from
around the world publish thousands of studies about heart disease. The US National Library of Medicine, which
maintains the world's largest and most comprehensive database of published health research, lists more than an
incredible 500,000 published research papers on heart disease alone.
Despite all this knowledge and
science, a staggering 25,000 Australians and 6,000 New Zealanders, including 500,000 Americans, will die from CAD
(coronary artery disease) each and every year. But why?
Much criticism has been raised at the actual nature of medical
research into heart disease that focuses only on very tiny and narrow questions without looking at the big picture.
For example, one research paper may look into why one specific nutrient causes the slightest change in one
particular hormone or highly specific chemical in your body. Some experts believe that medical research into heart
disease is failing to see the forest for the trees this way.
The way that the media then who go on to portray these
"findings" is also concerning, as journalists often get obsessed with the minutiae as well, such as cholesterol or
high blood pressure - when each issue they cover is but a branch of that tree in the forest.
Sensationalism sells copy after all and journalism is all about writing to sell newspapers.
The real heart of the matter is that major heart risks are quite interwoven, they
rarely occur singly, and the more risks you have the greater the threat of developing heart disease.
Researchers are finally taking note and doctors in Australia and NZ are now encouraged
to use a scoring system to assess the overall risk of CAD (coronary
artery disease) based on multiple risk factors.
Our advice is for you to look beyond the minutiae as well,
and to consider your body, as well as the mind and spirit when it comes to optimising your heart health. The
real bonus here is that you will be slashing your risk of many other chronic degenerative diseases of modern
civilisation such diabetes and cancer as well.
The six major heart
threats
You may have heard a lot about some of these six major
threats we cover in this website, because the form the major risk factors of heart and circulatory illness.
Three of these factors are more common, and you may know a bit about high blood pressure, cholesterol, and
excess body fat. However, you may not have heard much about the other three threats called metabolic syndrome,
oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. Learning the facts about these important risks will help to keep you
focused on what really matters and give you the knowledge and tools required to help you avert the real
threats when it comes to your heart. It is most empowering to discover that these threats are
all interconnected, and how certain simple dietary and lifestyle choices you make can affect one or
several at once. And we all know that applied knowledge is power, especially when you get to the "heart" of the
matter.
Your heart
The heart is the organ that pumps blood, with its life-giving
oxygen and nutrients, to all tissues of the body. If the pumping action of the heart becomes inefficient, vital
organs like the brain and kidneys suffer rapidly. And if the heart stops working altogether, death occurs literally
within minutes. Your very life itself is completely dependent on the efficient operation of the
heart.
There are many different kinds of heart disease, and they can affect
the heart in several ways. This website will explore several of the most common types of heart disease, and
look in particular at six of the most deadly threats to your
heart. The main problem with all
varieties of heart disease is that, in one way or another, they can all potentially disrupt the vital pumping
action of the heart.
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common type of heart
disease and is the primary cause of heart attacks. When you have CAD, your arteries become hard and narrow.
Blood has a hard time getting to the heart, so the heart does not get all the blood it needs.

The main
circulatory diseases
- Arteriosclerosis: also called hardening of the arteries, arteriosclerosis means the arteries become thickened
and are no longer as flexible.
- Atherosclerosis: When artery walls become so hardened with plaque containing cholesterol, fatty materials,
and cellular debris, that blood and oxygen can't get through the arteries. The illustration above is an example.
- Angina: Chest pain or discomfort that happens when the heart does not get enough blood, causing
severe damage to the heart muscle. It may feel like a pressing or squeezing pain, often in the chest, but
sometimes the pain is in the shoulders, arms, neck, jaw, or back. It can also feel like indigestion (upset stomach). Angina is not a heart attack, but having angina means you are
more likely to have a heart attack.
- Heart
attack: when a blood clot or other blockage cuts blood flow
to a part of the heart, killing part of the heart muscle. A heart attack occurs when an artery is severely or completely
blocked, and the heart does not get the blood it needs for more than 20
minutes.
- Congestive heart failure:
(CHF) is a condition in which the heart's function as a pump is inadequate
to deliver oxygen rich blood to the body.
- Stroke: when part of the brain doesn't get enough blood due to a clot or a burst blood
vessel.
How do you develop heart
disease?
Heart disease isn't "contagious", as you are most probably
aware, certain things increase your chances of getting cardiovascular disease, and we call these things risk
factors. Some of these risk factors are fixed,
like being older and having other unmodifiable factors such as a congenital heart problem (since birth) or genetic
factors like a strong family history. But in most all instances, people do have control over several risk factors —
smoking, having high blood pressure, being overweight, choosing the wrong foods to eat and not exercising
which can all increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
What are the signs of heart disease?
Many people do not realise they have cardiovascular disease
until they have chest pain, a heart attack, or a stroke, unfortunately. These kinds of problems often need
immediate acute medical attention and the person may need to go to the emergency department of a
hospital.

and blood vessel walls in general.
In conjunction with a healthy heart diet and stress management, the traditional herbs used in Cardio Drops are the perfect preventive measure for people
who have a family history of heart disease. They can be used in combination with drugs as a safe and effective
program for combating the gradual loss of heart and circulatory function that comes with age.
